Spring is the perfect time to start your concrete projects

Springtime is the right time for concrete projects!

Why? The weather, for starters. Pause for a moment and recall the wild winter we’ve had here in NorCal: snow, rain, floods, and hail. Some of this even happened while the almond trees were blooming. Weird? Yes. Also, not the best time for concrete and outdoor projects.

But spring is a great time to start if you have garden goals and concrete plans. There’s a wonderful window of time in April (and part of May) when it’s not too hot, and not too cool. Don’t wait until it’s too late! Last time we checked, pouring concrete in the heat of the summer is no one’s idea of fun.

Feeling inspired to start a few spring projects? Here's a list of outdoor projects perfect for this time of year.

1. Create retaining walls or pathways through your yard to break up the landscape. Drought-tolerant design is the name of the game here in California, but it doesn't have to be unattractive. Modern concrete pavers, concrete retaining walls, and other simple projects can create a unique (and drought-friendly) look on your property.

2. Add bark to your plants. Want an inexpensive way to add polish to your landscape design? Bark helps retain water, looks pretty, and won't have fall leaves on them for 6 more months. Plus, they create a nice mini-habitat for bugs and other critters. Just be sure to keep it at least 5 feet away from your home.

3. Redo your patio. Nothing says spring like refreshing your outdoor living space! Pour a new patio and enjoy a polished entertainment area. The temperatures right now are optimum not just for curing concrete, but saving you buckets of sweat. Not only will you have an easier time putting in your patio, but you’ll also be able to enjoy it while the temperatures are still kind.

4. Plant trees for shade. Speaking of sweat, one of the best ways to avoid getting drenched is to stay in the shade. If your property is lacking in good cover, plant some leafy trees! (Just remember to place and plant your trees so you can maintain defensible space and help protect your home from wildfires!)

5. Build an outdoor kitchen. Is there anything more wonderful than an al fresco feast on a sunny California day? Visualize your dream kitchen, and make it happen. Concrete has many applications and can help create everything from wood-burning pizza ovens to permanent grills, and more.

6. Do some good old-fashioned spring cleaning. “Spring cleaning” is an oft-repeated phrase for a reason! It feels good to tidy up, get rid of the old, and bring in the new. Clean out the garden beds, pull some weeds, and set yourself up with a clean slate for 2023 in your yard. You might even have room to put in some concrete planters and get a jump on your gardening!
