Mathews Readymix Provides Concrete for the Butte City Bridge Replacement

As a local business for the last 75+ years, it’s safe to say the work we do is more than just business: It’s an investment in our community. It’s why we’re excited to share our involvement in another project that will make a positive impact on our economy: the Butte City Bridge Replacement Project.

History of a bridge

Located on State Road 162 in Glenn County, the current bridge has served generations of farmers, residents, and visitors alike as a safe passage over the Sacramento River since 1948. It is a critical link between Oroville and Willows, and helps connect Butte, Colusa, and Glenn counties. But time has taken its toll on the steel bridge, especially on its weathered foundation. Concerns over its safety in regard to earthquakes, floods, and more have multiplied over the years, until Caltrans announced plans to replace it.

Construction Timeline

While originally slated to begin in June 2021, the Butte City Bridge Project broke ground in May 2022 and is estimated to take around 2 or more years. Currently, the completion date is projected to be in 2025, but this will depend on a variety of factors.

Project Goals

The goal is to replace the existing bridge to have standard 12-foot traffic lanes and 8-foot shoulders. It will also construct 8- to 14-foot shoulders on State Route 162 through Butte City in Glenn County. Unlike the existing bridge, these new updates will provide more room and support for modern agricultural equipment, trucks, school buses, and other large vehicles passing through.

Concrete Contributions

Mathews Readymix is contributing approximately 20,000 cubic yards of concrete to the project. The actual bridge deck requires a custom, proprietary blend of concrete we created for this project and tested for over a year to ensure its strength and durability. This special blend of fiber reinforcement is 3 lbs. macro synthetic fiber and 1 pound micro synthetic fiber per cubic yards and requires a high level of technical expertise to create, pour, and cure.

“This project is important because it’s one of the bigger projects Mathews has done and will take a lot of resources and coordination. Some of the pours will require using two plants at the same time to accomplish some of the largest pours Mathews has ever done.” -Aaron Bacon, Mathews Readymix Sales Manager
