DIY December: Concrete Projects you can do in the winter
The weather outside might be frightful, but DIY can still be delightful! Don’t let winter keep you from getting your concrete projects done this season. Whether you’re contemplating using it for indoor floors in the garage, concrete countertops, or other jobs on your to-do list, there are plenty of ways to get it done despite the weather—even if it is cold and raining. Not convinced? Mathews Readymix has some ideas for you below.
Indoor floors. Tired of tripping over crumbly, potholed floors in the garage? Luckily, you don’t need to wait until spring to make your dream of a smooth concrete surface a reality. Since they’re inside and protected from the elements, you can pour floors even during the winter.
Concrete countertops. One of the quickest ways to give your kitchen a little refresh before the new year begins is by swapping your old countertop for a concrete countertop. Whether you choose a sleek, modern, or rustic design, concrete countertops are stylish, durable, and won’t crack under pressure.
Patio. Want to get your new patio ready for backyard parties in the spring? You can do it in winter if the conditions are right. While it’s not advisable in most cases to pour concrete in the rain, you can if the temperatures are stable and you cover the area with tarps or plastic sheets to keep the rain out. You can even use a tent for a large area!
Pavers. Need a stable path to and from a certain part of your property? If you’re making your own pavers in the wintertime, be sure to insulate the molds with straw, insulated blankets, or foam to keep them warm enough when it’s cold. Remember, for concrete to cure properly, it’s best to have a moderate temperature of 50°F or above.
Finishes and sealants. Just like concrete, finishes and sealants also need a stable, warm-ish temperature for optimum results. However, there are some penetrating sealants that don’t form a film and can be applied when the temperature is below 50°F. Make sure to check your concrete product to find out what the drying time is, since it can be as little as an hour or as long as 48 hours. Then, you can use the weather forecast to plan your project accordingly.
